New Terms Relating to Audio Files

Stereo - equipment for sound recording and reproduction that utilizes two or more independent channels of information

Channel - a path for the transfer of signals or data within a computer or between a computer and its peripheral equipment

Track - any of a number of separate sections in the recording on a record, CD, or cassette
Frequency


Frequency -  the number of cycles or completed alternations per unit time of a wave or oscillation











Decibel


Hertz - the SI unit of frequency, equal to one cycle per second



Decibel - a unit used to express the intensity of a sound wave, equal to 20 times the common logarithm of the ratio of the pressure produced by the sound wave to a reference pressure, usually 0.0002 microbar

WAV- multimedia, file format, filename extension. A sound format developed by Microsoft and used extensively in Microsoft Windows
 MP3 - the file extension for MPEG Audio Layer-3, a set of standards for compressing and downloading audio files from the internet

AIFF - stands for audio interchange file format
