Digital Media

·         First off let see if we can list how many forms of digital media surround us (you should be able to come up with at least 5).
1. IPod
2. Computer
3. USB
4. CD
5. Mobile Phone
6. Television
·         What number system is digital data based on? What two digits are used to code all digital data?
It is the Binary system. The numbers 0 and 1 are used to code data.

·         What is a bit? What is a byte?
A bit (short for binary digit) is the smallest unit of data in a computer. A bit has a single binary value, either 0 or 1.
A byte is a unique set of adjacent bits with a unique meaning in a computer coding scheme. A byte generally comprises eight (8) bits that represent a letter in an alphabet.

·         What is “sampling rate”? Find an image that explains how sampling works (Wikipedia is a good resource here…you can place these images in your blog)
The sampling rate, sample rate, or sampling frequency defines the number of samples per second (or per other unit) taken from a continuous signal to make a discrete signal. File:Analog signal.png This picture shows the frequency per second. Which is known as the sampling rate.
·         How does Colour Depth (Color Depth) or bit depth effect the appearance of an image? Find some images to illustrate the effect.
The more "bits" in a image the better quality the image will be, because then it is capable of showing MORE colours.
 One bit, two colours.
 Two bits, Four colours.
Four bits, 16 colours
Eight bits, 256 colours.
·         Colour depth effects both still and video digital media. Sampling rate only effects video but not still media. Can you explain.
The sampling rates only apply for videos because the sampling rate is the samples per second, which only applies for more than one frame. Which pictures dont have unless they are a GIF image or made into a video.

Drawing Tools in Word

Creating a 3D picture using Word.

1. Insert -> shapes -> choose your shape

2. Select the shape -> Drawing Tools -> Formats -> 3-D effects

3. TA DA there is your 3-D shape.

Draw vs. Paint

Drawing programs create images composed of objects (e.g shapes, squares). The objects can have properties such as colour, line thickness. These objects can be edited, changed shape and easily edited etc.
Drawing programs create vector files.
E.g -Word
-Inkscape

Paint programs create images pixel by pixel. There are no objects, it only knows what it is pixel by pixel. It is hard to edit, the only way to edit it is to create a different pixel. Paint progrmas create BitMapped files.

Paint Tools

Pencil - Drawing tool.

Paint - To change the colour.

Eye Dropper - Selects a colour you've already used

Text - To add words with a textbox
Eraser - To rub out things.

Magnifine Glass - To zoom up on a section of the screen

Colours - To change/choose colours..

Shapes - To add a shape to the document/image

Brushes - To select the different types of brushes avaliable to different effects

Graphics Terms

Animated gif: The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.

JPEG: Joint Photographic Expert Group a compression algorithm for condensing the size of image files

Pixel: the smallest discrete component of an image or picture on a CRT screen (usually a colored dot)

bmp: Bitmap Image Format is an image file format

flip: turn upside down, or throw so as to reverse

video card: A piece of hardware installed into a personal computer to allow it to send video signals to an external output device such as a monitor or projector

crop: cut short

mirror: duplicating

fps (frames per second): Frame rate, or frame frequency, is the frequency (rate) at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames.

frame: a single image out of a sequence of images

morph: cause to change shape

cpu: central processing unit, that does most of the data processing

dpi: dots per inch

resolution: the number of pixels per square inch on a computer-generated display

file extension: A filename extension is a suffix to the name of a computer file this is widely used, but fragile as common suffixes such as ".mol" and ".dat

compression: make more compact by or as if by pressing

frame buffer: a buffer that stores the contents of an image pixel by pixel

colour depth: describing the number of bits used to represent the color of a single pixel in a bitmapped image or video frame buffer
